Human activity has dramatically increased the amount of bioavailable nitrogen on a global scale. In natural ecosystems, this excess nitrogen causes eutrophication and biodiversity loss. In artificial ecosystems such as closed recirculating aquaculture systems, however, nitrogen can also be a resource that supports biological production. How can we design nitrogen use for ecosystem conservation and restoration, as well as efficient circulation within artificial ecosystems? This session will reconsider where nitrogen comes from and where it accumulates or is discharged, and discuss desirable cycles that include removal, recovery, and reuse.

The conference also offers programs for discussions with researchers, startups, and companies from a wide range of perspectives. Please visit the conference website for details.
